The Rainy Season

Despite the rain, we traveled to Bologna yesterday for a bit of sightseeing.

This elaborate display is in the church of Santo Stefano, which is actually seven churches built between the 2nd and 12th centuries and combined into a one-stop history of Christianity lesson. This is in the 5th century part.

One reason I like Bologna a lot-- these are everywhere. (Bologna is known as 'La rossa, la grassa, la dotta': 'the red, the fat, the learned.' This refers to the red brick architecture and leftist political tendencies, the great food, and the university, which claims to have been founded in 1088.)

As for the rain, I'm hoping it lets up sometime soon. The New York Times had a good slideshow of the flooding in Italy, but here are my efforts to document the water in Florence:

Normally the Arno has riverbanks, but not anymore... luckily, it's still not close to the top of the flood walls.
